“I call on priests and the religious to defend themselves and their members against attackers as waiting for the Buhari administration to provide the needed security is equivalent to suicide,”
Earlier today, we reported that gunmen have abducted two Catholic priests: Rev. Father Udo from St. Patrick Catholic Church in Uromi and Rev. Father Philemon Oboh from St. Joseph Retreat Center in Ugboha. The two were kidnapped on Saturday night between Ehor and Iruekpen towns along the Benin-Auchi Expressway, the state police command said on Sunday.
Reacting to this incident after being briefed, the convener of Concerned Nigerians, Activist Deji Adeyanju lamented that attacks on churches and priests across the country by suspected terrorists seem to be on the increase even though President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has repeatedly denied that Christians are being targeted by Islamic jihadists in the country.
“It is disheartening that we have a president who has woefully failed, and yet seems not to accept the fact that he has failed Nigerians in every aspect of his engagement as a president, ” he said.
Recall that on Sunday, June 5, 2022, some terrorists stormed St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State during service, killing about 40 congregants. Many congregants were also injured during the deadly attack. Also about a week ago, gunmen suspected to be terrorists, killed a 50-year-old Catholic priest in Kaduna, Rev. Fr. Vitus Borogo. The Kaduna-based cleric was killed by the terrorists during a raid on a farm known as Prison Farm at Kujama, along the Kaduna-Kachia Road.
Mr Adeyanju further reiterated the statement made by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, calling on Christians to defend themselves against attackers.
“I call on priests and the religious to defend themselves and their members against attackers as waiting for the Buhari administration to provide the needed security is equivalent to suicide,” he concluded
